Follower Form: A Unique Diver Base in Rudabánya

Transforming Nature with Minimal Intervention

Rudabánya, Hungary - The Follower Form diver base, designed by Bence N. Krajnyák, is a remarkable architectural project that seamlessly blends with the surrounding landscape. Inspired by the natural beauty of the quarry pond in Rudabánya, this design aims to minimize its impact on the environment while providing a functional and visually striking space for divers.

The quarry pond in Rudabánya is known for its deep and cold waters, making it an ideal location for rescue divers and deep diving activities. The Follower Form diver base is strategically situated on the southwestern part of the lake, where the water is shallower and warmer, catering not only to experienced divers but also to beginners.

What sets the Follower Form diver base apart is its commitment to preserving the natural landscape. The design embraces the concept of land scraping, focusing on designing the environment rather than just the building itself. By following the natural contours of the scarp near the water, the base seamlessly integrates with the recaptured nature, creating a harmonious connection between the built structure and its surroundings.

The design of the Follower Form diver base is characterized by simplicity and sobriety. The raw finished reinforced concrete structure stands rough, blending with the rugged beauty of the quarry pond. Special attention has been given to protection, with reinforced concrete pusher-gates and narrow windows ensuring the base can be completely closed when not in use.

With an area of 1600 sqm and a height of 4.75 m, the Follower Form diver base offers ample space for divers and various functions. The elongated form of the building follows the line of the scarp, creating different zones within the base. These zones include rooms that require light, rooms that do not, parking areas, and the essential "road to diving" section.

The realization of the Follower Form diver base required the use of various specialized technologies. Steel sheet wall piling was used to secure the excavation pit, while special concrete placing methods and drilling precast concrete piles were employed for the foundation. The deep pools were constructed using reinforced concrete and a waterproofing system to ensure their durability.

Throughout the design process, careful consideration was given to sustainability and cost-efficiency. The base incorporates environmentally friendly features such as water management systems, greywater recycling, and biological sewage treatment. These measures not only minimize the base's impact on the environment but also contribute to the overall sustainability of the project.

The Follower Form diver base project, initiated in January 2018 and completed in July of the same year, showcases the possibilities of ethical human intervention in the land. By respecting and working with the natural landscape, the design offers a new interpretation of the location, promoting local tourism and responsible land use.

The Follower Form diver base, designed by Bence N. Krajnyák, was awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in 2019. This prestigious accolade recognizes the innovative and creative approach of the design, which combines art, science, and technology to enhance the quality of life and make a positive impact on the world.
